The politics of emotion during COVID-19: Turning fear into pride in China's WeChat discourse

In this article, we analyse the most popular stories that circulated on WeChat public accounts concerning personalized experiences of COVID-19 in China during first three months 2020. Among these non-fictional online writings, probe into ‘individual’ and mediated with coronavirus by questioning visualizations discourses their producers, as well concomitant emotions they invoked. Parallel to changing situation pandemic, observe a diachronic evolution emotions, from fear doubt (nationalist) pride. While articulating pandemic disparate perspectives, invariably built on, were shaped by, workings account platform (公众平台) evidenced its content moderation logic political economy. The analysis shows rather than facts, propel popularity stories. measures taken state are mostly applauded, only sometimes questioned; tragic memories rewritten, economic order is consolidated.
